Our Story …

We are really happy to announce that we're taking part in Mystery Box Rally in 2024!!

Kaz and I are partaking in the Mystery Box Rally this year not only to raise much needed funds to help find a cure for all cancers but also to empower women of all ages. We have set ourselfs the challenge to travel over 6000 km by car , an old car of over 25 years in age, to partake in the Mystery Box Challenge that will then see us travel another 2500 km . Here is a little bit of information about the rally and what we will be doing: We are BUZZAS BOX and we are participating in Mystery Box Rally 2024. This rally will see us departing Airlie Beach on  a mystery 5-day route with 300 other participants.

Karen and I are both local residents of the Western District, Karen works in the chemo and dialysis unit and I work in Aged Care at Western District Health Service.  We have both been touched by cancer with family members and my dear sister is currently fighting ovarian cancer , our wish is to raise as many funds as possible towards finding a cure against all cancers.

Mystery Box Rally is one of the largest community lead fundraising events for Cancer Council in Australia having raised over $7 million in the last 11 years. This rally will have us driving a car that is 25 years or older along outback roads. We will do approximately 2,500kms in 5 days. We set off from Airlie Beach & return to Airlie Beach 5 days later, each day in between is a mystery, we have no idea where we will be headed until just before departure the next morning.

In order for us to participate we need to raise $4,000 and every dollar raised goes to Cancer Council. We would very much appreciate it if you could donate to the cause & help us on our journey!

Here's what I'm doing …

Mystery Box Rally is a 5-day challenge like no other. Participants drive 25+ year old cars along a mystery route, through some of Australia’s most stunning (and often rugged) landscapes, all in support of cancer research. It’s not a race—it’s a challenge and more importantly, a celebration of the power of community.

Yes, the cars break down, and yes, there are plenty of unexpected twists along the way, but that’s all part of the fun. The rally is designed to be a colourful and unpredictable experience, where teams travel in small groups, helping each other along the way. And when the day’s drive ends, we gather around the campfire, share stories, and reflect on the day’s achievements.

This event brings together people who have been impacted by cancer in different ways—whether it's through their own battles or through loved ones. Together we’ll make memories that last a lifetime while supporting the fight against cancer.

Travelling around Australia in a car that is at least 25 years old, via some of its most formidable roads and remote communities.&nbsp;This year the rally aims to raise $1.3m for Cancer Council, which is used to fund cancer research projects nationally.Since 2009 we have raised over $41million and are the largest funders for the Cancer Council in Australia.&nbsp;The first challenge for our team is to raise a minimum of $4,000 therefore we would greatly appreciate it if you could support our team.&nbsp;How can you help us achieve our goals? There are three ways.&nbsp;1. Sponsor our team in return for branding on our car &amp; rally websites2. Tax deductible donation (anything over $2)3. <p>Karen and I first applied for the Mystery Box rally in &nbsp;October last year.&nbsp;</p><p>I had heard about the rally through my son-in-law law to be, Matt Doherty, who had completed the Shitbox rally the year before with his friend James Huf.</p><p>My father Kevin , affectionately known as Buzza , past away 3 years ago after battling throat cancer and this is what initially spurred me on to raise funds for cancer research. Hence the name of our &nbsp;team ‘Buzzas Box’ named in honour of my Dad.</p><p>Karen and I became great friends many years ago through our employment at WDHS.&nbsp; </p><p>Karen has also undergone her own family journey with cancer as well (which I’m sure she would be happy to &nbsp;elaborate on).</p><p>&nbsp;I approached Karen and asked her if she would be up for &nbsp;the challenge and join forces with me to go on this journey to raise funds for cancer research. Karen didn’t hesitate to say yes .</p><p>Not long after we started our team, my sister who lives in Geelong, was also diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, this was devastating news for our family , but pleased to report now that my sister is doing well at the moment and has been an inspiration to us all.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;Cancer is a horrible disease that does not discriminate against age or race, &nbsp;unfortunately most people are touched by it one way or another in their journey of life.</p><p>I’m looking forward to taking my Dads ashes with us on the road to raise awareness and funds to help function a cure for this horrible disease so msny have to suffer. <p>Working with Kim and becoming good friends, we have gone through personal experiences together.&nbsp;My husband Mark was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer around 8 yrs ago. Mark was vigilant to the signs and symptoms, as his dad had also been diagnosed with bowel cancer 20 years prior. Thankfully they are both cancer survivors, and as Mark didn’t receive his bowel test kit at fifty, his vigilance saved his life.&nbsp;As we are all aware, cancer doesn’t discriminate, from royalty to young children. I’m currently working in the chemo and dialysis unit at WDHS. Previously I have worked in community nursing and radiology, where I have continually been involved in the care of those touched by cancer. That care is not just the person but also their families. Those who are lucky to be called survivor’s, don’t stop being touched by cancer as they have to be continually monitored and also reminded daily due long term side effects from their diagnosis and treatment.So when Kim asked me to help raise funds for cancer research through the Mystery box rally, I didn’t hesitate and with thanks to community support we are continually working towards raising funds for cancer research and awareness.</p><p>Kaz </p>

Fundraising - Our Impact

Founded in 2009, Box Rallies has raised well over $50 million for cancer research with our chosen beneficiary being Cancer Council.

We are proud to be the funder of national cancer research projects after the Australian Government. These enormous funds raised go towards vital cancer research projects.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Mystery Box Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.
